Illinois will turn 200 on Dec. 3, but the bicentennial celebration is already well underway ahead of the official gala at Chicago’s United Center on the state’s birthday.
Illinois Office of Tourism Director Cory Jobe said the bicentennial party is already starting statewide this month.
“We’re actually offering free access to more than 80 participating historical sites, museums, architectural gems around the state,” he said.
One of the goals is to encourage people to explore Illinois, Jobe said.
“We’re really encouraging Illinoisans to get out and travel the state,” he said. “So we’re breaking the state into four regions and in the southern part of the state the Doors Open weekend is this weekend.”
Other regions of Illinois will offer specials and free admission to sites during other weekends this month.
Tourism by visitors from outside the state is always a bonus but they also want Illinoisans to get reacquainted with their home state, Jobe said.
“We encourage people to hope to take some time and travel throughout the state and really reconnect with our state’s history through all our great historic sites and museums,” he said.
Another event will take place on Aug. 26, which is Constitution Day in Illinois. Jobe said they’ll be handing out birthday cake in seven cities that day, including a special cake in Springfield.
“A really large Eli’s Cheesecake and we’ll have samples and just something that’s going to kind of be a theme and history of 200 years in Illinois,” he said.
This fall, several farms will feature bicentennial-themed corn mazes and tourists can get a special bicentennial passport to be stamped at 56 locations across Illinois including historical sites and museums.
