Seasonal Crash Diets: In The Pursuit of a Swimsuit Body





During the summer months, people seem to care more about their “swimsuit body” and getting to it quickly without thinking about the long term effects it has on the body. Slim-Fast, crash diets, and even starvation are used to get that instant gratification of weight loss. I know looking good is an essential factor for most when it comes to losing weight, but we really should concentrate more on the inside of our bodies. Food and eating affect us mentally, emotionally, physically every day, and we need to be careful about how we use and or abuse food.

Food is something that is always there throughout life. Birthdays: birthdays, holidays, and even funerals all done with food accompaniment. Food is celebrated and brings joy, but used correctly; it helps the body and handled incorrectly, can hurt our bodies. So many women/men, young and old around the world, even here in Metamora, struggle with food and weight loss. What is most concerning is the unhealthy relationships we are having with food. It isn’t the enemy, and we need to be more aware of how to use food to our advantage and still lose weight or just be healthy in general. Unfortunately, we are all in a hurry and think we don’t have the time to do this simple task. 

How many people skip breakfast everyday day? Think about that number, but apply it to high school students. After sleeping all night, our body is so ready for calories. It is very tough to concentrate or complete a thought when you are hungry. Skipping the morning meal can throw off your body’s rhythm of fasting and eating. When you wake up, the blood sugar your body needs to make your muscles and brain work, their best is usually low. Breakfast helps replenish it.[1] 

Men need a minimum of 1,500 calories per day, while women need 1,200, to provide nutrients for bodily functions such as pumping blood, hormone production, cellular repair, and breathing.
If you starve yourself, you won’t have enough energy for everyday tasks, not to mention the energy needed for the essential bodily functions. Starvation can lead to weakness, nausea, nutritional deficiencies, digestive distress, dizziness, fatigue, and depression. Undergoing a starvation diet or fast for too long can have an adverse effect on your health and even lead to organ failure. [2]    

Never in my overweight life did I ever consider that food had this much control over my mind/body. If you know of anyone who is struggling with this issue, don’t hesitate to help them out. This can be a lifelong battle for some, but it shouldn’t have to be that way. If we learn at a young age how to manage our food relationships, we have a much better chance of not having a health issue because of food. Start off right every day with breakfast and work from there.
