Galesburg, Ill. - One neutral game. That's all Metamora has in this year's Galesburg Thanksgiving Tournament, and that game happened Friday night, when the Redbirds (1-1) (0-0) took on the defending Class 1A State Champion, Danville Schlarman (1-0) (0-0).

For the Hilltoppers, it was a great start. Metamora, not so much. Schlarman came out with an intensity that makes it hard to describe.

The Redbirds were able to get a couple of twos, one each, from Anne Peters and Alana Terry, but the aforementioned furious start offensively for the Hilltoppers four of the five starters in the scoring column. Notre Dame signee and #21 senior in the country (ESPNW) Anaya Peoples paced Schlarman with 9 points.

Both teams stepped the scoring up in the second quarter, but neither team by much. Rather than Peoples, it was Capria Brown, another Hilltopper with interest from multiple Division-I schools, who scored six of her 10 on the game. Metamora totaled seven points in the second quarter. All of that being said, it was a comfortable 23-point lead at the break for Schlarman.

A tale of two halves. Metamora did all they could to try and mount a comeback in the second half. The third quarter would actually turn out to be Schlarman's lowest-scoring quarter of the game, and the Redbirds would out-score them 12-10. Terry and Reagan Begole combined for 10 of those 12, with a two from Alivia West being the other score.

Last season's meeting between these two teams saw a combined 33 fouls called. It got awfully close to that number again, and for that matter, most of them may have come in the fourth quarter alone.

Credit goes to West, who made the most of the free throw opportunities, going 7-8 from the charity stripe in the closing period. Had West made the one other free throw, her and Begole would've tied for the team's lead in scoring. Despite narrowly besting the Hilltoppers once again, 15-13, that early start by the reigning 1A champs doomed Metamora, and it resulted in a 57-38 loss.
