Germantown Hills, Ill. - Conference rivals for a regional championship. Sound familiar? At the high school level, it was the Metamora girls against Washington for a regional title. Wednesday night in Germantown Hills, it was the host Warriors (18-4) taking on the Panthers from Washington Middle. The winner would play Forrest Prairie Central for a trip to the State Finals.

The first quarter, the Warriors were in the right position. The defense stood tall, and Washington Middle wasn't able to get many looks. Then again, neither team got many good looks in the entire first half. Through six minutes, the Warriors held onto an 8-2 lead.

Next six minutes of play did not go as well for the Warriors. Turnovers continued to carry over from the opening quarter. A positive for them, however, was that the Panthers still weren't able to make many shots. A free throw from Germantown Hills was all the Warriors could muster in the second, turning a six-point end of quarter lead to a 9-9 draw at the half.

Third quarter would be a big momentum gain, no matter who would get it. The scoring still hadn't returned to where it was in the opening quarter, with a two and a free throw all that Germantown Hills could get. Izzy VandeSchraaf had been carrying most of the scoring load, having nine of the Warriors' 12 points by the end of the third. The Warriors would need a big push at the end to keep their season alive.

They got that push. A high-scoring, back and forth, physical quarter made for an exciting finish. It came right down to the multiple timeouts and the intentional fouling. But something would have to give. The edge would favor the Panthers in the late-going. No matter the difficulty of the shot, next to everything seemed to be falling for Washington Middle, and that would result in a 29-24 win for the visitors.

Washington Middle advances to the Washington Central Sectional game against the aforementioned Forrest Prairie Central.

The 8th Grade Warriors will play either either Washington Middle or Metamora Grade next Tuesday at Eureka Middle School.
