Washington, Ill. - The regular season is winding down for area prep volleyball teams, and that's not without a rivalry match in the final week. The Metamora Redbirds (18-16) (8-5) traveled to Torry Gym to take on the Washington Panthers (14-19) (4-9).

The early portions of the first set were pretty much dominated by Reagan Begole. Begole would be responsible for all three of Metamora's opening three points of the match. Yet Washington capitalized on some attack errors by the Redbirds, and took their first lead at 6-5.

When an Alivia West block brought Metamora within 8-7, nobody got a multiple-point lead until much later in the set, when the Panthers were forced to call a timeout, with the Redbirds ahead 19-15. It remained close through the end of the set, with Metamora out-scoring Washington 6-5.

The Redbirds would eventually take the opening set from the hosts, 25-20.

Now, the second set was all but back and forth. The Redbirds got a kill from Begole to go up 4-3, and that would be the closest Washington would get.

In fact, 21-8 would be the dominant run that Metamora would go on. It was 12-5 when the Panthers called their first timeout, 22-9 when they called their second.

The Redbirds would narrowly best Washington 3-2 the rest of the way, winning the second set and thus, the match, 25-11.

The win marks the Redbirds' fourth-straight true home/road match, with the last true home/road loss coming at Limestone on October 2nd.

The Redbirds will travel to Canton High School to take on the Lady Giants on Thursday. Metamora won easily the last time the two met, 25-15, 25-15. It also marks the end of the regular season.

Metamora will host the regional this season. It kicks off with a doubleheader at Toepke Gym on Monday. Galesburg and IVC square off at 5:30 pm, with Metamora against Streator to follow. The winner plays Dunlap on Tuesday at 6:30 pm, also at Toepke Gym.
