NO-HITTER; Johnson and Litviak combine for the no-no, Redbirds at Pontiac today

Becca Johnson and Sidney Litviak in action during Tuesday's Regional Quarterfinal in Metamora. The sophomore and senior combined for a no-hitter, with each of them giving up a walk apiece as the only base-runners.

Germantown Hills, Ill. - It was practically a picture perfect day for some postseason softball at Metamora High School, and it just so happened to be the last athletic event of the year at the home fields of MTHS. It pitted the Metamora Redbirds (13-18) playing host to the Streator Bulldogs (8-23) out of the Interstate Eight conference.

Redbird sophomore Becca Johnson got the starting nod and went right to work, taking Streator's top third of the batting order 1-2-3 to get things started.

It didn't take long for the Redbirds to respond with the bats, as Sidney Litviak launched a solo home run to give Metamora a 1-0 lead in the first.

After Johnson allowed a walk to start the second, the door was shut again on the Bulldogs and the walk would be stranded.

Brace yourselves for what came in the bottom of the second, as it was Metamora's biggest offensive output of the game. Two RBI hits from Riley Beltramea and Gillian Guerrero plus yet another home run, this one a two-run home run from Kaylee Hieronymus; that all put the Redbirds up 5-0 after two.

The pitching never slowed down for Metamora, as Johnson had another 1-2-3 inning in the circle for the third. Promptly, the Redbirds answered with another run-scoring inning. Maddi Benson would hit a home run, Metamora's third of the game, and it would set the final score of 6-0, favoring Metamora.

There was still softball left. Another inning of three up, three down for Streator. It was about this point that anyone keeping score took serious note of the fact that there was a zero in that hit column.

Johnson would throw one more inning in the fifth, striking out two in that inning. After that, it was senior Sidney Litviak, headed to St. Louis Community College next year, who would come on in relief.

Litviak only allowed a walk in the sixth and the rest of the batters in the sixth inning were all strikeouts. Seventh inning up next. First batter - groundout. Second batter - groundout. With just one batter standing between the Redbirds and a no-hitter was Streator's Aubrey Durdan, who prior to her at-bat in the seventh was 0-2 with a couple of popouts. She would groundout, Maddi Benson on the throw to Anna Barrow, and the no-hitter and a 6-0 win was complete.

The win moves Metamora into the Regional Semifinal today against the host Pontiac Indians.

On paper, the Indians have lots of numbers to look at. They may have seven losses, but their recent schedule is definitely of note. In their last three games, they are (3-0). Who are they against? None other than 3A #2 Ottawa on the first game, and the last two were a doubleheader (and shutout) sweep of 3A #1 Charleston.

According to Metamora Coach Deric Linder, one of Pontiac's pitchers is going to the University of Illinois. The Indians themselves come in at #12 in the latest 3A rankings. Pontiac also finished fourth in a very tough Illini Prairie Confernce, which for 2018 was lead by the Spartans from St. Joe Ogden.

The Metamora-Pontiac game will be live on three platforms: the NFHS Network, Mixlr (audio), and Periscope. The links will be at the bottom of this article. First pitch is set for today at 4:30 pm.
