ICC Softball splits doubleheader with Kankakee

Madi McCoy and Allison Pillman were key contributors in Game 1 and Game 2 of the doubleheader respectively. In Game 1, McCoy hit a solo home run and grand slam. In Game 2, Pillman was one of three ICC players with a multi-hit game.
East Peoria, Ill. - It was finally a somewhat decent day for softball on Tuesday afternoon, and that opened the way for a doubleheader between #10 ICC (11-5) and Kankakee (11-14) at the CougarPlex.

If you blinked, you probably missed too much already. The visiting Cavaliers only got four players to the plate to start the game, with a single by Jenna Arseneau being the only base runner to start things.

The bottom of the first scratched the surface for ICC sophomore Madi McCoy, who hit a solo home run at the top of the order. A single by Shelby Terrell and a walk drawn by Katie David after a long battle had the Cougars threatening to tack on even more runs right out of the gate, but McCoy's shot was the only tally after one, as ICC held the 1-0 lead an inning in.

All it took was two innings. Kankakee managed a hit in the top half, eventually stranding two runners. What the #10 Cougars did next is the definition of pouring it on. Kayla Ford got a double to start the chain of events. That was followed by a Sam McKee walk and Abbey Stoller single. After a Lou McWhirter strikeout, it set the stage for McCoy, who would blast her second home run of the game, a grand slam, and her fifth RBI of the game as well. That would put ICC up 5-0.

Oh, you thought the ICC bats were done for the inning? Nope. A single by Terrell and another drawn walk by David were just some of what followed. Alexis West and Ford also reached on errors. Stoller also reached on a fielder's choice. After all that was said and done, ICC held a 8-0 lead over Kankakee after just two innings of play.

That seven-run inning by the Cougars may have sparked a fire in the Cavaliers, as they would respond in the top of the third with an RBI double from Morgan Charters and a sacrifice fly plus the RBI for Emma Ledbetter, which gave Kankakee their only two runs of the game.

It may have just been for an inning, but the ICC bats quieted. Singles by McCoy and David were the hits, plus Terrell reached on a fielder's choice. ICC would still hold an 8-2 lead after three.

The top of the fourth saw a comparatively unproductive trip to the plate for the visitors, although they were able to get two singles and draw a walk, the only negative being that none of those base runners came around to score. In the bottom half, it was worst case scenario for the Cavaliers. ICC had another big inning. Singles from West, McKee, and Stoller preceded a McWhirter at-bat. When the freshman from East Peoria stepped up to the plate in the fourth, an RBI single was the result. Terrell added to the action with a sacrifice fly and an RBI. That got followed up by a two-RBI single by McKinsey Walters, which set the final score in game one, favoring ICC, 13-2.

The win in game one made the #10 Cougars (11-4) on the season, but there was still one game left.

In game two, the Cavaliers used three-hit games from both Ledbetter and Halle McCrory to get out to their own 8-0 lead on ICC after four innings.

Allison Pillman was a positive for the Cougars offensively in game two. Pillman got two hits in three trips to the plate. On top of that, David and Ford also finished with two hits, the only difference being getting those hits in four at-bats versus three.

The split brought ICC to (11-5) and the Cavaliers to (11-14).
