Metamora Herald Sports Reporter: Alex Staab

Metamora Herald Sports Reporter: Alex Staab, Metamora Herald

I am from Germantown Hills  and am an alum of Metamora High School (‘16), as well as St.
Mary’s Grade School (‘12). I currently attend Illinois Central College to focus on my general education courses. Ideally, I plan to transfer to Bradley University in the fall of
2018 to major in Sports Communication.

The ‘furthest up’ I played a sport is having ran Cross Country for Gene Jones at Metamora,
who may just be one of the greatest coaches a student-athlete could ask for. I also played freshman year as a pitcher for the baseball team, but then I began to get more broadcasting and announcing opportunities. I knew I wasn’t going to be much of a ballplayer or runner, so I knew the route to take.

It all started when I announced Boys Basketball games at St. Mary’s. Towards the end of
my 8th-grade year, I was told I should talk to the High School Athletic Director, Jared
Hart, and see if I could do some announcing for the school. Although I started
with Varsity Baseball in the Spring of 2014 (they got third in state that year), the longest
tenure I have as the primary announcer for a team is Girls Soccer, having served as their
Public Address Announcer since the spring of 2014.  I think it was just out of passion and love for sports. I wanted to be able to learn more about sports from the professional side of things.

- Since my time at Metamora, I am now a Public Address Announcer for the
following:

- Bradley Braves
- Women’s Basketball (10 games, Since 11/27/16)
- Women’s Volleyball (11 matches, Since 9/5/17)
- Softball (12 games, Since 4/1/17)
- TOTAL OF 33 GAMES AS OF 10/11/17
- Illinois State Redbirds
- Women’s Soccer (6 games, Since 8/25/16)
- In regards to Broadcasting
- MTCO Redbird Replay
- Baseball (since spring 2016)
- Softball (since spring 2017)
- Girls Basketball (13-14 to 16-17)
- Boys Basketball (since 13-14 season)

 Favorite individual performance/season I’ve witnessed as a
journalist/announcer/broadcaster:
- 2016-2017 Bradley Women’s Basketball season
- Leti Lerma (5’10” from Muscatine, IA)
- She averaged a double-double her senior year and wound up
breaking the all-time rebounding record at Bradley and now plays for
the St. Louis Surge of the Women’s Blue Chip Basketball League
(WBCBL).
- The impressive part to me is a 5’10” girl breaking a rebounding
record of all things, at the NCAA Division I level.

Favorite team performance I’ve announced for is a tie between:
- Metamora Girls Soccer (Sectional Championship Game - W in 2015)
- Metamora Volleyball (Broadcasted SuperSectional - L in 2015)

Some of my professional inspirations and people I’ve looked up to in the field:
- #1 Biggest Idol of all time is Vin Scully (Former LA Dodgers Broadcaster)
- Dick Vitale (ESPN College Basketball)
- Jay Bilas (ESPN College Basketball)
- Al Michaels (NBC Sunday Night Football)
- Mike Tirico (NBC)
- Jim Mattson (WEEK)
- Kurt Pegler (WMBD/WYZZ)
- Lonnie Schwindenhammer (Peoria Journal Star) *passed away in 2016*
