A former tech consultant found guilty of defrauding State Farm of hundreds of thousands of dollars is headed to prison.

Former State Farm Insurance contractor and McLean County Board Chairman Matt Sorensen was sentenced to one year in federal prison by U.S. District Judge Ronald A. Guzman Tuesday afternoon for his role in defrauding State Farm of $890,000 in false expenses between 2003 and 2012.

Under federal law, Sorensen must serve at least 85 percent of the sentence, or a little more than 10 months.

The reduced sentence is in exchange for joint responsibility with his co-defendant Navdeep Arora for recovery of nearly half a million dollars. He entered a plea of guilty to one count of wire fraud last November. The felony charge carried up to 20 years in prison and $250,000 in fines. The 51-year old Sorensen was originally charged with five counts of wire fraud.

The judge also ordered Sorensen and Arora to jointly pay another $490,975 back to State Farm. Arora is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 18.

In issuing the sentence, Guzman said Sorensen had one of the most impressive public service records he had ever seen.

Sorensen's attorney, Stu Shannon, said he was pleased with the sentence and that Guzman "took the whole person into account."

Sorensen will report to prison at 2 p.m. Nov. 27. He said he met Arora in the 1990s.

"He offered a mechanism to add to my income and I took it," Sorensen said of Arora, adding that he was sincerely sorry for his crime.

He and Arora were indicted in January.

Sorensen resigned from his chairman position after the indictments were made public. Officials with the county confirmed that they could not find any improprieties in Sorensen's work as chairman.
