National Mixed Breeds Day. This picture is adorable!

Hard to believe it is the last day of July. Today, July 31st, celebrates quite a few events. It is National Raspberry Cake Day. This is a delicious way to celebrate summer. Here is a link to some yummy recipes http://www.delish.com/cooking/g4042/raspberry-cakes/. It is also National Cotton Candy Day. Cotton Candy is always a great summer treat! [1] Machine-spun cotton candy was invented in 1897 by the dentist William Morrison and confectioner John C. Wharton and first introduced to a wide audience at the 1904 World's Fair as "Fairy Floss" with great success, selling 68,655 boxes at 25¢ per box.

It is also National Avocado Day. I always believed this to be more of a vegetable but it is the official state fruit of California. Avocados are so delicious and can be used in so many ways. Great as a condiment or topping or a shake. Did you know you can grow an Avocado plant domestically? Place the pit in a jar of water, [2] the pit sprouts in four to six weeks, at which time it is planted in standard houseplant potting soil. The plant normally grows large enough to be prunable; it does not bear fruit unless it has ample sunlight. Home gardeners can graft a branch from a fruit-bearing plant to speed maturity, which typically takes four to six years to bear fruit. Here is something I didn't know, their seeds and leaves are poisonous to animals.

Last but not least, it is National Mutt Day or Mixed Breeds Day. Since 2005, July 31st and December 2nd are days that recognize mixed breed dogs. This type of dog will never have a pedigree. but they are great pets nonetheless. "Mixed breed dogs tend to be healthier, better behaved, they live longer and are just as able to perform the duties of pure bred dogs - such as bomb and drug sniffing, search and rescue and guiding the blind. There are millions of loving and healthy mixed breed dogs sitting in shelters, who are desperately searching for a new home. So please visit your local shelter and find a new friend! If you can't adopt a mixed breed friend on July 31st or December 2nd, please donate at least $5 to your local animal shelter, as they all need financial assistance and every dollar counts! You can also volunteer to walk a dog, donate food and other supplies needed to your local animal shelter or make a donation in the memory of a loved dog who has crossed the Rainbow Bridge." from [3]  http://www.nationalmuttday.com/
