Bipartisanship Does Work

metamora herald field

Recently, many of our representatives wrote a letter to the House Appropriations Committee to ask them to not close the National Center for Agriculture Utilization Research (NCAUR) facility located in Peoria, IL. [2]In President Trump's proposed budget for 2018, this facility along with others across the country would be closed. Leaving hundreds of people without jobs. Also, would put the USA behind in research and benefits of innovation in Agriculture. Tammy Duckworth, Dick Durbin, Darrin LaHood, Sherry Bustos, and many others came together and wrote a bipartisan letter appealing to the importance of this facility in IL.

This particular facility has been involved in innovative research for almost 80 years. NCAUR discovered Xantham, which is used in chewing gum salad dressing and other food items, the technique to produce high fructose corn syrup and developed soybeans into a successful row crop. They are famous for coming up with the strategy to mass produce penicillin, and this strategy was used all around the world. That is what lead to the induction into The National Historic Chemical Landmarks program. [1] The program was launched by the American Chemical Society in 1992 to recognize seminal achievements in the history of chemistry and related professions. The program celebrates the centrality of chemistry. The designation of seminal achievements in the history of chemistry demonstrates how chemists have benefited society by fulfilling the ACS vision: Improving people's lives through the transforming power of chemistry.

Agriculture has supported the people and economy for hundreds of years. Being able to go forward and find new avenues to go down in agriculture are necessary for our survival. Fortunately, this letter was an eye-opener for the House Appropriations Committee and they decided to give the funding needed for this facility to survive. Great work by our representatives! It goes to show that when the two sides work together great things are possible and can be achieved.
