April Awareness Month

Metamora Herald child abuse proclamation

The month of April celebrates and honors many different causes. As some of you may know it is Autism Awareness month, and on Sunday, April 2nd, 2017 was the #LIUB event celebrated all over the world. Many breakthroughs are happening right now. Due to research and eventually, someday, there could be a cure. Fingers crossed. Another important cause is Sexual Assault & Prevention Month. This proclamation was first introduced by President Barack Obama in 2009. Thank you, sir!

The tradition was upheld by the new POTUS Donald Trump. In his proclamation he states, “As we recognize National Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, we are reminded that we all share the responsibility to reduce and ultimately end sexual violence.  As a Nation, we must develop meaningful strategies to eliminate these crimes, including increasing awareness of the problem in our communities, creating systems that protect vulnerable groups, and sharing successful prevention strategies. My Administration, including the Department of Justice and the Department of Health and Human Services, will do everything in its power to protect women, children, and men from sexual violence.  This includes supporting victims, preventing future abuse, and prosecuting offenders to the full extent of the law.  I have already directed the Attorney General to create a task force on crime reduction and public safety.  This task force will develop strategies to reduce crime and propose new legislation to fill gaps in existing laws.”

This is so sweet, but then a few days later he was quoted defending Bill O'Reilly, in an interview with the New York Times saying, “ he is a good person, I think he shouldn’t have settled; personally I think he shouldn’t have settled. Because you should have taken it all the way, Bill did nothing wrong.” Hmm, that sounds like the opposite of the proclamation. At least he tried I guess. Let’s not forget it is also Sexually Transmitted Disease Month. Please help to do what you can for this cause.

Here in Metamora, we had our own proclamations signed to make April Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness. Donna Cross of the MGHJWC had the proclamation signed by Ken Maurer and Jeff DeGroot, presidents of the villages. The women’s club has sold pinwheels, raised $503.11 for PCA Illinois, and they have been “planted” around the towns. We also put together first night kits for kids and donated them to the Heart House in Eureka. Also, we have put canisters at Metamora IGA and Casey’s in Germantown Hills for collection to give to Prevent Child Abuse Illinois. Thank you, ladies, for doing all these wonderful projects. Please donate to help further the cause.
