Local Candidate Profile: James Schertz

My name is James L. Schertz, and I am a lifelong Metamora Township resident. I reside in rural Metamora with my wife, Kathy. We have three adult children and two grandchildren. I have worked in township road and bridge construction, maintenance and snow removal for over 42 years with nearly 16 years as the current Metamora Township Highway Commissioner.
Over the years, I have strived to and will continue to work with the township board to do my best to maintain and upgrade the township road system as efficiently as possible for all residents. I take pride in maintaining open and honest feedback with the residents of Metamora Township. I am an active member of the Township Highway Commissioners of Illinois. I am currently the secretary of the Woodford County Township Highway Commissioners Association and sit on the state Board of Directors for the East Central Illinois Highway Commissioners Association. Under my direction, Metamora Township was the first township in Woodford County to implement an eco-friendly snow and ice removal policy which incorporates beet juice to reduce salt costs, corrosion, and environmental impact.
I have worked under three previous highway commissioners, before being elected to serve as the current Metamora Township Highway Commissioner. I believe the knowledge which I have gained from my predecessors, as well as the experience of being the highway commissioner myself for almost 16 years, clearly makes me the best choice for Metamora Township Highway Commissioner. I have developed an excellent working relationship with the local emergency crews, schools, and sheriff’s department. I am well versed in the complex budget and tax levy process and have held tax rates in check during my time in office. Motor fuel tax revenues from the state have steadily declined during my time in office, yet I have managed to update township roads and equipment. It has been my privilege to serve the residents of Metamora Township as highway commissioner for over 15 years, and I would appreciate the opportunity to continue. The taxpayers of Metamora Township will be the winners if I am re-elected to fulfill another 4-year term due to my experience and ability to keep an eye on the past as I look to the future.
