International PI Day

Metamora Herald Black and white Albert Einstein

Tuesday, March 14th, 2017, is International PI Day. The first three numbers of PI are 3.14, so naturally 3-14 is a perfect day to celebrate math and Albert Einstein’s birthday. I think he would have loved a day for eating pie and celebrating mathematics and it being on his birthday. Too cool. This fun day was created and organized by Larry Shaw, a physicist who worked for the Exploratorium Science Museum in 1988. Ingenious Larry, a day of eating pies.

In 2009, the U.S. House of Representatives, passed a resolution which supports the designation of PI Day and encourages schools to participate. Schools should take the time to celebrate mathematics ( not to mention Albert Einstein’s birthday) and eat some pie. Talk to them about the importance of math and how it helps us in our daily lives. Computers, cell phones, video games, and cooking food all done with math and science.

In Princeton, New Jersey, they have an annual celebration with pies and an Einstein look alike contest. Other towns have an annual pie eating contest. This is my kind of celebration! Happy PI Day!
