China Reforms Salt Monopoly

New regulations beginning this year are set to change how China manages the salt business. While government planners will continue to monitor the production and distribution of salt, manufacturers will have more leeway to set their own prices based on fair market value.
While many see this as great news and progress on Chinas' promise to open up markets to foreign investment and competition, others are quick to point out that a monopoly still exists. This is hopefully just a glimpse of what is to come ahead, with other market segments in state-dominated industries on the horizon.
