MGHJWC Quarter Auction

The Metamora-Germantown Hills Junior Women’s Club (MGHJWC) held a quarter auction on Thursday, October 6th, 2016. The event took place at a local restaurant and was from 6:30 to 8:30. It was a very fun local charitable event.

“MGHJWC is a non-profit volunteer organization whose purpose is the improvement of social, moral, and educational conditions in the community and state. To encourage personal growth, and to foster lasting friendships," says Michelle Bohm as she is explaining how the auction works.
I found out about the event on Facebook and thought it sounded like fun. Everything auctioned for 1 to 4 quarters. Too cool! So I get my $1.00 paddle along with a long list of the items up for bid and make my way to the last empty table. There is an excitement in the air.

This is my first time at the auction or one of the MGHJWC events. The room is filled with lots of ladies of all ages. They are laughing, talking, eating and drinking, it is quite an event. So much going on and I am just ready to begin.DSCF0109.JPG
There is a long list of items up for bid. These items are so nice and for a quarter or 4, What? I am getting antsy. So those who want to bid on the item have to hold up their bid. Then you hold up your paddle with the number on it, mine is 146.

Now, you can buy multiple paddles for $1.00 each. And on each item, you can use 1,2, 3, or all or none of your paddles, but your have to pay a quarter per paddle per bid. After the quarters are collected and you hold up your paddle, a number is then drawn. Kind of like a lottery. If your number is called you win.

This is so fun. Everyone is bidding almost every time. I had to pace myself. I wanted to make sure to bid on the items that were door prizes: because all of that money went to the MGHJWC for charity.

All the ladies who worked the auction were volunteers. The vendors were independent business women, who donated their time and great items for this auction. Some of them included Posh, Scentsy, SuzyQ Oils, Pampered Chef, and JS clothing just to name a few. Thank you all for your time and effort. So nice.

The money collected at this and other events held by the MGHJWC go to some great local causes. They have helped to build playgrounds, donated school supplies, and they help with the Breakfast with Santa every year. They have also raised money for military charity projects as well as helped out the local firehouses.

This month is Domestic Violence Awareness month and the MGHJWC is helping with this cause. They have donated 6 first night kits. These are a bag for women who have to flee in the middle of the night or in a hurry. Each kit has a few items of clothing and personal hygiene essentials. So thoughtful of the group. They also have purple canisters up in Metamora and Germantown Hills at Casey’s, Heartland Bank, Commerce Bank, and IGA. They are looking for donations of change and that money will go to the Heart House. Anyone interested in donating, please do so at these convenient locations or contact the MGHJWC at 383-4843.

I was privileged enough to get to meet one of the founding members for this area, Paulette Thompson. She told me she and a few of her friends started this club “Because I was new to the area, and wanted a way to make new friends and make a difference in the community.”  It is $45.00 per year to join, and it seems like they have a lot of fun and they are making a difference.

Well, the evening ended promptly at 8:30 and I did have a lot of fun, even though I didn’t win. Oh well, always the next auction in the spring. For those of you interested in checking out the MGHJWC their next meeting is October 24th, 2016, 7:00 p.m. at the Germantown Hills Firehouse.
